My family and I are relocating from New York after accepting a remote-friendly job based in Texas. We have two kids in elementary school and are looking for a place where we can settle long-term. Every relocation guide seems to recommend Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, but they all sound completely different depending on who you ask. Some people say Austin is too expensive now, others say Houston traffic is unbearable, and then there are people who swear Fort Worth is the hidden gem. We care about schools, family life, housing costs, and having things to do on weekends. For people who have actually made the move, how did you choose where to land?

We moved from Long Island to the Dallas suburbs three years ago. For us, Dallas checked the most boxes: strong job market, good schools, major airport access, and plenty of family-friendly neighborhoods. The biggest adjustment was how spread out everything is. In New York, a 20-minute drive feels long. In Texas, that’s just a normal trip to dinner.

If you’re looking for a slower pace, don’t overlook Fort Worth. It feels more relaxed and a little less corporate than Dallas while still giving you access to the entire metro area. We found the people friendlier, the housing slightly more affordable, and the traffic a bit less intense. It still has plenty of restaurants, events, and things for families.

Austin is fantastic if you want culture, outdoor activities, and a younger vibe, but housing costs shocked us. We originally moved there from Brooklyn because everyone talked about Austin being affordable. That may have been true years ago, but today it’s one of the pricier markets in Texas. Great city, just make sure the budget matches reality.
