Posting from Chicago, Illinois. We may be heading to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, mostly because of renting before buying. On paper it makes sense, but I don’t want to make a clean spreadsheet decision and then create a messy family life. Specific question: Older Nashville homes: inspection and maintenance surprises?. My spouse is more practical about the move than I am, and I keep worrying about the emotional side. We are trying to avoid choosing a house that looks great online but creates a bad routine. What did you only understand after living there for a few months?

I live near this now, and my answer is mixed. the house can be right and the location can still be wrong. People focus on square footage, kitchens, and price, but the first-year stress usually comes from allergies, church/community fit, setup costs, and commute or school logistics. Renting first is annoying, but it buys local knowledge. If buying immediately, confirm insurance, taxes, inspections, school boundaries, pet rules, and commute before you emotionally move into the house.
