Posting from Seattle, Washington. We may be heading to Whitestown, Indiana, mostly because of downsizing from a larger home. On paper it makes sense, but I don’t want to make a clean spreadsheet decision and then create a messy family life. Specific question: Moving costs to Carmel: what did families spend?. We have two kids and one dog, so the decision feels bigger than just picking a nice neighborhood. We are trying to avoid choosing a house that looks great online but creates a bad routine. What did you only understand after living there for a few months?

A weekend visit will not show this clearly. the house can be right and the location can still be wrong. People focus on square footage, kitchens, and price, but the first-year stress usually comes from basement maintenance, suburban quiet, setup costs, and commute or school logistics. Renting first is annoying, but it buys local knowledge. If buying immediately, confirm insurance, taxes, inspections, school boundaries, pet rules, and commute before you emotionally move into the house.
