Posting from Houston, Texas. We may be heading to Fishers, Indiana, mostly because of one-income trial year. On paper it makes sense, but I don’t want to make a clean spreadsheet decision and then create a messy family life. Specific question: Is Carmel worth paying more than Fishers or Westfield?. One of us will work hybrid, and the other may be remote at first, so weekday routine matters a lot. We are trying to understand the true monthly cost, not only rent or mortgage. What did you only understand after living there for a few months?

Former Los Angeles, California perspective: separate the monthly budget from the arrival budget. The monthly budget has housing, cars, childcare, utilities, insurance, and activities. The arrival budget has deposits, furniture, movers, repairs, hotel nights, and all the annoying things nobody posts on Instagram. In Carmel, HOA expectations and north-side commute are the two categories I would not underestimate. A move can still be financially smart and still feel expensive during the first six months.
