We’re seriously looking at Bellevue, Washington from New Orleans, Louisiana. The move started because of first home purchase, but now my spouse and I are stuck on the practical details. Topic: Is Bellevue worth the higher housing cost?. Budget matters, but I do not want to choose the cheapest option and make our routine miserable. We are trying to understand the true monthly cost, not only rent or mortgage. I would love real answers from people who live nearby, not just the polished version from listing photos or relocation videos.

The part I wish someone had told me earlier: separate the monthly budget from the arrival budget. The monthly budget has housing, cars, childcare, utilities, insurance, and activities. The arrival budget has deposits, furniture, movers, repairs, hotel nights, and all the annoying things nobody posts on Instagram. In Seattle & Bellevue, no AC in older homes and tech work schedules are the two categories I would not underestimate. A move can still be financially smart and still feel expensive during the first six months.
