Posting from New Orleans, Louisiana. We may be heading to Duluth, Georgia, mostly because of one-income trial year. On paper it makes sense, but I don’t want to make a clean spreadsheet decision and then create a messy family life. Specific question: Childcare and summer camp costs in the north suburbs?. We may rent first, but school timing and lease timing are making the decision stressful. We are trying to understand the true monthly cost, not only rent or mortgage. What did you only understand after living there for a few months?

Former Santa Monica, California perspective: separate the monthly budget from the arrival budget. The monthly budget has housing, cars, childcare, utilities, insurance, and activities. The arrival budget has deposits, furniture, movers, repairs, hotel nights, and all the annoying things nobody posts on Instagram. In Atlanta, intown versus suburb trade-offs and traffic patterns are the two categories I would not underestimate. A move can still be financially smart and still feel expensive during the first six months.
