We are considering a move to Tokyo, Japan and trying to understand what daily life would actually feel like for our family. The specific concern is family juggling parent healthcare and kids. Online guides make it sound manageable, but I want to hear from people who have lived through the messy first year. We have kids, school routines, work pressure, and family expectations involved, so this is not just a lifestyle experiment. What should we prepare for before making the move?

Honestly, the first three months were the hardest because everything felt small and constant. For us, the biggest mistake was treating Tokyo, Japan as one simple choice. The real decision was school commute, housing location, language comfort, medical access, and whether the parent who handles daily logistics could function without burning out. The first few weeks were not normal life. They were setup mode. Forms, phone plans, school messages, groceries, doctor appointments, transport routes, and apartment rules all arrived at once. My advice is to choose the option that makes weekdays easier, not the one that looks best in photos. Relocation does not fail because the city is bad. It fails when ordinary days become too heavy.

Please budget for the emotional cost too, not only rent and school.

I would be careful about choosing only for the children and forgetting the adults. Kids often find school friends and routines faster than parents. The trailing spouse or remote-working parent may be the one who feels invisible. That can create resentment even when the move is technically successful. Before signing housing, ask: where will each adult go during a lonely Tuesday afternoon? That question sounds small, but it matters.

The answer about routines is so real. One familiar bakery changed my week.

This is exactly the part people do not mention before you move.
