We are relocating from Los Angeles, California to Sydney, New South Wales and trying to understand whether partner visa stress while raising kids in a new country is something families really deal with after arrival. Online advice is either too positive or too vague. We have children, work schedules, budget limits, and no local support yet, so small mistakes could change daily life quickly. For people who already made this move, what did you learn after the first few months?

Do not wait for an emergency to figure out healthcare, school contacts, phone setup, and local payment systems. Set up boring essentials first.

The paperwork was stressful, but the dependence was harder. When one spouse understands the system better, the other can feel like a child. Divide tasks intentionally so one person does not become the family help desk.

Prepare documents earlier than feels necessary. Passports, visas, birth certificates, marriage certificate, school records, immunization records, employment letters, rental documents, medical summaries, and digital copies. The first month is easier when documents are not scattered across email and luggage. Also ask your employer for very specific relocation support. “We help you settle in” can mean almost nothing unless someone walks you through banking, school, housing, and local ID steps.

This is exactly the kind of detail I wish people told us before we moved.

Agree with this, especially about not choosing by weekend visits.
