We are relocating from Toronto, Ontario to Sydney, New South Wales and trying to understand whether healthcare setup: medicare, private insurance, pediatricians, and specialists is something families really deal with after arrival. Online advice is either too positive or too vague. We have children, work schedules, budget limits, and no local support yet, so small mistakes could change daily life quickly. For people who already made this move, what did you learn after the first few months?

One friend changed everything for our child too. Before that, every day felt temporary.

The paperwork was stressful, but the dependence was harder. When one spouse understands the system better, the other can feel like a child. Divide tasks intentionally so one person does not become the family help desk.

We learned this the expensive way. The commute looked fine online and felt awful in real life.

Prepare documents earlier than feels necessary. Passports, visas, birth certificates, marriage certificate, school records, immunization records, employment letters, rental documents, medical summaries, and digital copies. The first month is easier when documents are not scattered across email and luggage. Also ask your employer for very specific relocation support. “We help you settle in” can mean almost nothing unless someone walks you through banking, school, housing, and local ID steps.

Do not wait for an emergency to figure out healthcare, school contacts, phone setup, and local payment systems. Set up boring essentials first.
