We are relocating from Portland, Oregon to Sydney, New South Wales and trying to understand whether should we rent first before choosing a sydney suburb? is something families really deal with after arrival. Online advice is either too positive or too vague. We have children, work schedules, budget limits, and no local support yet, so small mistakes could change daily life quickly. For people who already made this move, what did you learn after the first few months?

Rent first if you can. Online research cannot tell you enough about noise, commute, storage, school run, parking, neighbors, and how the area feels after dark. Moving twice is annoying, but buying or signing a long lease in the wrong place is worse. We chose the nicer-looking home first and regretted the daily logistics. The house was fine. The routine was not.
