We are relocating from Chicago, Illinois to Sydney, New South Wales and trying to understand whether sun safety, swim lessons, and beach anxiety for new families is something families really deal with after arrival. Online advice is either too positive or too vague. We have children, work schedules, budget limits, and no local support yet, so small mistakes could change daily life quickly. For people who already made this move, what did you learn after the first few months?

Small routines really do matter. Our local bakery basically became our emotional support system.

Our kids adjusted faster than we did. That was comforting and painful. They found school friends while we were still missing our old adult life. Give yourself permission to grieve without calling the move a mistake.

Agree with this, especially about not choosing by weekend visits.

This made me feel less crazy. Month two was much harder than I expected.

Loneliness can happen even in a friendly city. People may be kind but busy. We made friends through repeated places, not one-off events: school volunteering, sports, religious community, language class, dog walks, and the same cafe every week.

Different suburb for us, but the same pattern. The practical choice ended up being the kind one.
