We are relocating from Stockholm, Sweden to Sydney, New South Wales and trying to understand whether we chose sydney for outdoor life, then realized we needed routines not scenery is something families really deal with after arrival. Online advice is either too positive or too vague. We have children, work schedules, budget limits, and no local support yet, so small mistakes could change daily life quickly. For people who already made this move, what did you learn after the first few months?

The first month is not real life. It is setup mode. You are learning transport, groceries, school messages, doctors, bills, weather, and social rules all at once. Do not judge the relocation while your brain is still translating every tiny routine. Small routines made the city feel personal: same bakery, same park, same school parent, same walking route. Home arrived slowly.

I would add: check the school run during rain. That changed our opinion fast.

Same here. The emotional part was way bigger than the checklist.

Different suburb for us, but the same pattern. The practical choice ended up being the kind one.

Loneliness can happen even in a friendly city. People may be kind but busy. We made friends through repeated places, not one-off events: school volunteering, sports, religious community, language class, dog walks, and the same cafe every week.

Our kids adjusted faster than we did. That was comforting and painful. They found school friends while we were still missing our old adult life. Give yourself permission to grieve without calling the move a mistake.

One friend changed everything for our child too. Before that, every day felt temporary.

Agree with this, especially about not choosing by weekend visits.
