We are relocating from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Sydney, New South Wales and trying to understand whether sydney looked perfect online, but the loneliness surprised us is something families really deal with after arrival. Online advice is either too positive or too vague. We have children, work schedules, budget limits, and no local support yet, so small mistakes could change daily life quickly. For people who already made this move, what did you learn after the first few months?

The first month is not real life. It is setup mode. You are learning transport, groceries, school messages, doctors, bills, weather, and social rules all at once. Do not judge the relocation while your brain is still translating every tiny routine. Small routines made the city feel personal: same bakery, same park, same school parent, same walking route. Home arrived slowly.

Agree with this, especially about not choosing by weekend visits.

We learned this the expensive way. The commute looked fine online and felt awful in real life.

Same here. The emotional part was way bigger than the checklist.

Our kids adjusted faster than we did. That was comforting and painful. They found school friends while we were still missing our old adult life. Give yourself permission to grieve without calling the move a mistake.

Small routines really do matter. Our local bakery basically became our emotional support system.
