Hi everyone! I’m Marco, owner of Golden Coast Relocation Co. here in Sacramento. We’ve been moving families in and out of the area since 2011, and I see a lot of the same questions (and surprises) come up every season. I figured I’d share what I’ve learned, especially for those of you planning a move in the next year.
1. Avoid moving in July and August if you can.
Summer days regularly hit 100°F+. It’s hard on movers, but it’s also hard on your belongings. Candles melt, electronics overheat in trucks, and plants don’t survive. If summer is your only option, book early morning slots.
2. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for late spring and summer.
June is our busiest month by far. End-of-month and weekend dates fill up first, so mid-week, mid-month moves are often cheaper and easier to schedule.
3. Check the parking situation in older neighborhoods.
Midtown, East Sac, and Land Park have beautiful homes but narrow streets, alleys, and limited parking. Ask your mover if they’ll need a smaller shuttle truck. It can add cost if no one plans for it.
4. Set up SMUD and your other utilities before move-in day.
SMUD (electric) is pretty quick to set up online. PG&E handles gas in most areas, and water and trash depend on your city or county. Nothing’s worse than arriving in 105°F heat with no AC.
5. Coming from the Bay Area? Downsize before you move, not after.
Many families moving from the Bay end up in bigger homes here, but long-distance pricing is often based on weight or volume. Selling or donating before the move saves real money.
6. Get a binding estimate in writing.
Whether you use us or someone else, make sure your mover is licensed with California’s Bureau of Household Goods and Services and gives you a written estimate. Be wary of very low phone quotes that “change” on moving day.
7. Give yourself a buffer week.
Closing dates shift, rentals get delayed. Short-term storage is a lifesaver if your move-out and move-in dates don’t line up.
Happy to answer any questions here in the thread. Moving logistics, which neighborhoods are tricky to move into, how to estimate costs, whatever helps. No sales pitch, just glad to help people settle in smoothly. 🙂
