We are relocating from Dallas, Texas to Point Cook, Melbourne, and this issue keeps coming up for us: point cook gave us space but the commute is becoming a marriage issue. Most guides make Melbourne sound easy, but family relocation feels more complicated. We have school concerns, budget limits, and no deep local support yet. For families who already moved, what did you learn after living it day to day?

Small routines really do matter. Our local bakery basically became our emotional support system.

This is exactly the kind of detail I wish people told us before we moved.

Rent first if you can. Online research cannot tell you enough about noise, commute, storage, school run, parking, neighbors, and how the area feels after dark. Moving twice is annoying, but buying or signing a long lease in the wrong place is worse. We chose the nicer-looking home first and regretted the daily logistics. The house was fine. The routine was not.

Ask boring questions before signing: lease break, repairs, parking, strata/body corporate rules, pets, noise, heating/cooling, internet, school proof, and what happens if your job location changes. Boring questions save money.

Agree with this, especially about not choosing by weekend visits.

Measure your old life against the new layout carefully. Furniture, pets, kids, grandparents, storage, and work-from-home needs all behave differently in a new housing market. A beautiful unit can become stressful if daily basics do not fit.
