We are relocating from Los Angeles, California to St Kilda, Melbourne, and this issue keeps coming up for us: st kilda looks fun, but is it family-friendly?. Most guides make Melbourne sound easy, but family relocation feels more complicated. We have school concerns, budget limits, and no deep local support yet. For families who already moved, what did you learn after living it day to day?

Choose the place that fits Tuesday morning, not Saturday sightseeing. Every city has dreamy neighborhoods that are wrong for school drop-off, groceries, commute, or a tired child. We stopped asking where visitors would be impressed and started asking where daily life would be easiest. Community fit matters too. If you need language, faith, or cultural support, do not treat that as optional. It is part of settling.

We picked the practical suburb first and felt boring for a while. Then ordinary days got easier. That is not glamorous, but with children it counts for a lot.
