We are relocating from Vancouver, British Columbia to Melbourne, Victoria, and this issue keeps coming up for us: should we ship furniture or buy after seeing the house layout?. Most guides make Melbourne sound easy, but family relocation feels more complicated. We have school concerns, budget limits, and no deep local support yet. For families who already moved, what did you learn after living it day to day?

Ask boring questions before signing: lease break, repairs, parking, strata/body corporate rules, pets, noise, heating/cooling, internet, school proof, and what happens if your job location changes. Boring questions save money.

Rent first if you can. Online research cannot tell you enough about noise, commute, storage, school run, parking, neighbors, and how the area feels after dark. Moving twice is annoying, but buying or signing a long lease in the wrong place is worse. We chose the nicer-looking home first and regretted the daily logistics. The house was fine. The routine was not.

This made me feel less crazy. Month two was much harder than I expected.

Different suburb for us, but the same pattern. The practical choice ended up being the kind one.

I would add: check the school run during rain. That changed our opinion fast.
