We are relocating from San Diego, California to Melbourne, Victoria, and this issue keeps coming up for us: melbourne weather mood swings are harder than expected. Most guides make Melbourne sound easy, but family relocation feels more complicated. We have school concerns, budget limits, and no deep local support yet. For families who already moved, what did you learn after living it day to day?

Loneliness can happen even in a friendly city. People may be kind but busy. We made friends through repeated places, not one-off events: school volunteering, sports, religious community, language class, dog walks, and the same cafe every week.

One friend changed everything for our child too. Before that, every day felt temporary.

Our kids adjusted faster than we did. That was comforting and painful. They found school friends while we were still missing our old adult life. Give yourself permission to grieve without calling the move a mistake.

The first month is not real life. It is setup mode. You are learning transport, groceries, school messages, doctors, bills, weather, and social rules all at once. Do not judge the relocation while your brain is still translating every tiny routine. Small routines made the city feel personal: same bakery, same park, same school parent, same walking route. Home arrived slowly.
