We are relocating to Madrid and cannot decide between city neighborhoods and suburbs like Pozuelo, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, or Alcobendas. Online, everything looks good for different reasons. The city feels exciting and walkable. The suburbs seem better for space, schools, and parking. Did families rent temporary housing first?

Rent first if you can. Madrid city life and Madrid suburban life are very different. City gives walking, metro, cafes, culture, and less car dependence. Suburbs give space, calmer streets, and some school access. We thought we wanted central Madrid until school commute and our dog changed the equation. Renting first saved us from buying the wrong life.

We stayed in the city and are glad. Our kids walk more here than they ever did in the U.S.

The suburbs are not failure. With three kids, parking and space mattered more than tapas outside our door.
