We moved to Madrid from Denver with a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old. I knew dinner was later in Spain, but I did not understand how much it would affect playdates, restaurant plans, school-night routine, and social life. Our kids are tired before Spanish families even start dinner. How do foreign families handle this?

We kept our children on an earlier schedule and stopped apologizing for it. At first, I felt antisocial leaving gatherings early or feeding the kids before everyone else. Then I realized tired children ruin everything. Over time, we adjusted slightly later, but not fully Spanish-late. Protect sleep first.
