I moved to Madrid with my spouse and kids and promised myself I would learn Spanish quickly. Reality: school runs, work, groceries, cooking, tired children, appointments, and admin leave almost no brain space. I feel embarrassed because I am living in Spain and still struggling with basic conversations. How do parents actually learn Spanish?

Slowly and with less shame. Parents do not learn like university students with empty afternoons. We learn through school notes, pharmacy visits, children correcting pronunciation, and awkward neighbor chats. I started with survival Spanish: doctor, landlord, school, groceries, directions. Fluency can wait. Function comes first.

I improved when I stopped hiding behind my spouse. Terrible Spanish in public is painful but effective.

Your children may pass you quickly. That is humbling and useful.
