We are moving from California to Spain, and our work would be in Madrid. Our 16-year-old daughter keeps saying Barcelona sounds cooler, more beachy, more international, and more fun. Madrid seems practical for jobs and schools, but she thinks we are choosing the boring city. Has anyone dealt with a teen who wanted a different Spanish city?

Our teen said the same thing. Madrid won her over slowly, not with parent speeches. Friends, music, cafes, football matches, Retiro, weekend trains, and independence mattered. Do not try to prove Madrid is cooler than Barcelona. Let Madrid become hers through routine.

Teenagers need social access. Choose a school where she can make friends quickly. A city cannot compete with loneliness.

We promised our son one Barcelona weekend after he gave Madrid three months. Weirdly, that made him complain less.
