We are moving to Madrid next year with two children, ages 7 and 11. My company will help with relocation, but school is the part that keeps me awake. International school feels safer because the kids can continue in English. Spanish school feels more immersive and less expensive, but I worry about language, homework, parent communication, and whether my older child will shut down socially. Has anyone chosen one system and later regretted it?

For our older child, international school was the right landing. He was already grieving friends, apartment, grandparents, and his soccer team. Adding a full Spanish academic environment would have been too much. We still did Spanish tutoring and local sports, so he was not living in an English bubble. The younger child could have handled Spanish school faster, but age matters a lot.

We split the kids: Spanish concertado for the younger one, international school for the older one. It was messy but honest. One child wanted immersion; the other needed emotional safety.

Do not choose school separately from commute. Madrid traffic can make a “great school” feel like a family punishment by October.
