      We are a Korean American family moving from LA to Madrid for my husband’s work. Our kids speak some Korean at home and English at school. Now we are adding Spanish, and I worry Korean will disappear completely. Madrid sounds exciting, but I do not want the kids to lose the language they use with grandparents. Has anyone balanced English, Spanish, and a heritage language after moving?

      It is possible, but you need a routine. Spanish will come from school and daily life. English may stay strong through parents and media. Korean needs intentional protection: calls with grandparents, Korean books, Korean meals where the language is normal, and maybe a weekend group. Do not make Korean only a correction language. That is when kids resist.

      Our daughter kept Korean better when we found one other Korean family. Peer language matters more than parents realize.
