We are a Black British family with two children and may move to Madrid for my partner’s job. I am less worried about tourist Madrid and more worried about daily life: school, hair care, being stared at, subtle racism, other Black families, and whether our children will feel alone in certain neighborhoods. Has anyone moved as a Black family to Madrid?

Madrid is not London. That was the first emotional adjustment. There is diversity, especially in certain neighborhoods, but it can feel less layered than what we had before. We found Afro hair care through recommendations, not Google. School choice mattered a lot. Some schools were warm but not very diverse; others had more international families. Our kids did fine, but we had to build community intentionally.

People stared more than I expected at first. Not always hostile, but noticeable. My son noticed too, and we had to talk about it honestly.
