We moved to Madrid with high hopes but are considering leaving after one year. Nothing terrible happened. The kids are okay. The city is beautiful. But we miss family, our work schedules are bad, Spanish bureaucracy drains us, and my spouse never settled. I feel ashamed because so many people dream of living here. Has anyone left Madrid and felt conflicted?

Leaving is not failure. A city can be wonderful and still not fit your family. We stayed, but only after changing school, neighborhood, work hours, and expectations. If those changes had not worked, we would have left too. Do not let Instagram make a family decision for you.

We left Madrid after eighteen months. I still love the city. I just did not love our life there.

The question is not whether Madrid is good. The question is whether your family is well.

This is the most honest thread here. People need to talk about leaving without shame.
