We moved to Madrid with two kids, and they are doing better than expected. They have school friends, playground routines, football, and favorite snacks. My spouse and I are the ones feeling lonely and disoriented. I thought we were moving for the kids, but they seem fine and we are the fragile ones. Is this common?

Very common. Kids adjust through repetition: same school, same park, same classmates, same bakery. Adults keep comparing identities, careers, friendships, and old routines. Our children belonged before we did. It was humbling, but also comforting. We stopped asking them if they missed home every day and started building our own life.

The first parent friend matters as much as the first child friend. Maybe more.

I cried after a school birthday party because everyone else seemed to know the rules. My daughter had fun. I was the one lost.
