We have been in Madrid for ten months, and only recently did it start feeling less temporary. Nothing dramatic changed. We just have regular places now: bakery, park, pharmacy, fruit shop, school route, weekend lunch place. The city feels more personal. For others, when did Madrid start feeling like home?

Same. Home arrived through repetition, not romance. The first time the bakery woman knew my child’s order, I felt something shift. Madrid stopped being a city we were trying to understand and became the place where our small life happened.

For us it was when our son gave directions to a visiting grandparent. Suddenly he was not the new kid anymore.

I stopped translating prices in my head around month nine. That was my boring milestone.

Our first real friend changed everything. Before that, Madrid was pretty but lonely.
