We moved from Singapore to Madrid and expected an easy international transition. Madrid is international in some ways, but daily systems feel more Spanish than we expected. English is not as automatic, service expectations are different, and school-parent culture feels less expat-smooth. Has anyone else had this surprise?

Yes. Singapore spoiled us for English-language convenience. Madrid is international, but it is still deeply Spanish in daily life. That is part of the value, but it also means you cannot expect every system to bend around English. Once we accepted that, we stopped being frustrated every day. We learned more Spanish and chose fewer battles.

Madrid is not an expat service platform. It is a city. That took me too long to understand.
