We thought moving from London to Madrid would lower our family costs. Rent is cheaper in some areas, but when we add international school, deposits, agency fees, furniture, private health insurance, flights home, language classes, and summer camps, the savings look smaller. Did Madrid actually save money for your family?

Madrid saved us money only after we stopped living like temporary expats. International school and furnished housing were expensive. Imported groceries were expensive. Eating out in tourist areas was expensive. Once we found local routines, local markets, public transport, and fewer “comfort purchases,” the budget improved. The first six months were not cheap at all.
