We moved to Madrid recently and local groceries can be reasonable, but our kids keep asking for familiar snacks, cereal, peanut butter, ranch, mac and cheese, and lunchbox items. I keep buying imported foods because everyone is homesick, and now groceries are not as cheap as I expected. Did other families go through this?

Yes. Imported food became our emotional spending. I was not buying cereal; I was buying five minutes of peace before school. Eventually we created a comfort shelf and stopped trying to rebuild our U.S. pantry. The kids found Spanish snacks they liked, and the grocery bill calmed down.

Homesickness has a grocery bill. Nobody warns you.
