The more we research our move from Vancouver to Studio City, the more we realize it involves much more than comparing housing prices and neighborhoods. Although the move makes sense for our home-buying plans, we’re unsure what everyday life, commuting, and settling in will really be like after the first few months. For families or newcomers who have made a similar move, what would you do differently, and what should we investigate more carefully before deciding?

I was the spouse without the built-in job structure, and that made the move harder than people expected. In LA, the exact commute and parking situation can turn a good apartment into a bad daily life. Also listen to the person in the family who is least excited. They often see the problem everyone else is trying to ignore.

Run the full monthly number before deciding. Rent or mortgage is only the loud cost; the quiet costs are what wear you down. A neighborhood can look perfect online and still fail your real routine if work, school, friends, and errands are scattered. The move became better when we stopped comparing the new place to the old one and started building repeatable routines.

Before committing, test the weekday version: school drop-off, grocery routine, commute, doctor access, and evening energy. It did get easier, but not because everything became perfect. It got easier because we stopped expecting the move to solve every problem.
