We’ve been looking closely at what our finances would actually look like after moving from Mumbai to Westwood, and we’re finding that the answer isn’t as straightforward as we expected. A higher LA salary sounds promising, but once we factor in housing, transportation, insurance, and everyday expenses, we’re wondering how much of that increase we’d realistically be able to save. The move makes sense in some ways, but we’re trying to understand the financial reality beyond the numbers on paper. For families or newcomers who have made a similar move, how did your finances actually change after the first few months? What surprised you the most, and what would you do differently before making the decision?

Run the full monthly number before deciding. Rent or mortgage is only the loud cost; the quiet costs are what wear you down. A neighborhood can look perfect online and still fail your real routine if work, school, friends, and errands are scattered. Before committing, test the weekday version: school drop-off, grocery routine, commute, doctor access, and evening energy.

The apartment was cute. The parking situation made me hate coming home.
