My job may bring me to Lisbon first, and my spouse and children may come later depending on paperwork. Part of me thinks I should set everything up alone first. Part of me worries the kids will miss school start and my spouse will feel left behind. Has anyone staggered the family move?

I moved first, and it helped with housing and paperwork, but emotionally it was harder on my spouse than I expected. She felt like I was beginning a new life while she was still packing the old one. If you stagger, communicate constantly and set a clear date. Do not let “later” become a foggy word.

School calendar should drive the decision if you have kids. Missing the social start of school made our daughter feel behind.
