We are moving from LA to Lisbon for at least three years. We cannot decide whether to ship furniture. Portuguese apartments seem different in size and layout, and many rentals are furnished. But our kids are attached to their rooms and familiar things. What did families actually ship?

Ship less than you think. Our American furniture looked too large in the Lisbon apartment, and some rentals already had pieces we could not remove. The best items we shipped were not expensive furniture. They were mattresses, favorite bedding, kids’ books, family photos, and a few kitchen things that made home feel like home.
