      We found an apartment we like in Lisbon, but it is in an older building with no elevator. We have a toddler, a 7-year-old, groceries, school bags, and sometimes visiting grandparents. The price and location are good, but I’m worried the stairs will slowly destroy us. Would you accept no elevator for the right neighborhood?

      With a toddler, I would be very careful. Stairs are not just stairs. They are groceries, stroller, sleeping child, luggage, grandparents, illness, rainy days, and every single school morning. We did one year in a third-floor walk-up. The apartment was charming. My knees were not charmed.

      If grandparents will visit, no elevator becomes a family issue, not just your issue.
