We live car-free in London and hoped to do the same in Lisbon. But with kids, school, groceries, beach trips, doctors, and activities, I’m not sure. Some neighborhoods seem transit-friendly, while others feel car-dependent. Can families manage without a car?

You can live car-light in central Lisbon, but family life may still push you toward occasional car use. School location is everything. If school, groceries, doctors, and activities are close, no car is possible. If your child’s school is west and you live east, you will suffer. We use transit, walking, taxis, and car rental when needed.
