We may move from Tokyo to Lisbon for three years. I know Lisbon has charm, weather, and a slower lifestyle, but I worry about systems feeling less predictable. In Tokyo, everything works on time and school communication is structured. I am nervous about bureaucracy, housing repairs, transit delays, and whether I will constantly compare Portugal to Japan. Any Japanese families here who adjusted to Lisbon?

You will compare everything at first. I did. Trains, paperwork, customer service, school replies, apartment repairs — Lisbon felt softer but also less precise. The adjustment improved when I stopped expecting Tokyo efficiency. Lisbon is warmer socially, more relaxed with children, and easier emotionally in some ways. But yes, you need patience.

We chose Oeiras because central Lisbon felt too chaotic after Tokyo. It gave us more space and calmer routines.
