My wife is Brazilian, and we thought Portugal would be easy because of the language. But Brazilian friends warned us that Portuguese culture and language rhythm can feel very different. Our kids understand Brazilian Portuguese but answer mostly in English. We want them to strengthen Portuguese, but I worry they will be teased for accent or feel caught between Brazilian, American, and Portuguese identity. Has anyone moved from a Brazilian-American household to Lisbon?

Language helps, but it does not erase culture shock. My kids understood a lot but still struggled with European Portuguese pronunciation, school slang, and feeling corrected. Adults sometimes made jokes about Brazilian expressions. Nothing terrible, but enough for my son to become quiet. We had to remind him that his Portuguese was part of who he was, not a mistake.

Brazilian families are visible in Lisbon, so your kids will not be alone. But prepare them that same language does not mean same culture.

My daughter relaxed when she met other Brazilian kids at dance class. School alone was not enough.
