We moved to Lisbon six months ago. Our kids now have friends, school routines, favorite snacks, and Portuguese words they correct us on. My spouse and I still feel like temporary visitors. We like Lisbon, but we do not yet feel rooted. Did your children become local before you did?

Yes. Kids attach through repetition: school, playground, bakery, football, classmates, snacks. Adults attach through meaning, friendships, competence, and identity. That takes longer. I stopped being jealous of my kids’ adjustment and started copying it. Same cafe. Same walk. Same market. Same neighbor hello. Home came slowly.

My son corrected my Portuguese at the pharmacy. I was proud and offended.

The first parent friend changed everything for me.
