People in Lisbon have been kind, but I’m struggling to make real friends. We meet parents at school and chat with neighbors, but everything stays polite. Other expats are sometimes temporary, and local friendships take time and language. How long did it take to build actual community?

Kindness and friendship are different stages. Lisbon was warm to us, but real friendship took repetition and vulnerability. Parent groups helped, but the best friendships came from boring consistency: same school gate, same Saturday activity, same gym class, same neighbor conversations. It took about a year to feel less like we were auditioning for community.

Our kids became local through school before we even knew how to ask for things at the pharmacy.

Temporary expat friendships are still real. I had to stop dismissing them just because someone might move away.
