We have been in Lisbon for 18 months. The first year, I compared everything to Brooklyn: food, friends, schools, pace, diversity, convenience, ambition. Recently, I realized I was finally comparing this week to last week here, not to life back there. That felt like progress. Did anyone else settle only after they stopped measuring Lisbon against home?

This happened to us too. At first, every inconvenience became evidence that we had made a mistake. Then slowly Lisbon became specific: our bakery, our park, our school route, our neighbor, our weekend tram, our doctor, our favorite beach day. Home stopped being a comparison and became a collection of routines.
