We are U.S. citizens considering Lisbon. My employer allows remote work from abroad, but now we are trying to understand taxes, residency, social security, health insurance, and whether we need both U.S. and Portuguese tax advice. I do not want legal advice from a forum, but I want to know what surprised families financially.

The surprise was how early we needed professional advice. We thought taxes were something to handle after moving. Wrong. Residency timing, employment structure, payroll, foreign income reporting, banking, and health coverage all affected decisions before arrival. Pay for proper advice before you sign leases or make permanent plans.
