I work remotely for a U.S. company, and my spouse may not work at first while helping the kids adjust. We are considering Lisbon because quality of life seems better, but I worry about school fees, rent, private health insurance, flights home, language classes, and everyday costs. Can a family live comfortably on one U.S. income in Lisbon?

It depends less on the salary number and more on school choice. International school can turn Lisbon from manageable to stressful quickly. If housing is central and school is private, one income needs to be strong. If you live farther out, use local school, and cook mostly at home, the budget looks very different. Build two budgets before moving: the romantic Lisbon budget and the actual Tuesday-with-kids budget.

Our one-income year worked because we avoided the expat lifestyle creep. Cafes, taxis, weekend trips, and imported groceries quietly add up.
