Nobody warned me that the paperwork would be the hardest part of leaving Toronto for Bellevue. My employer is sponsoring the move, but I’m realizing there are many small steps around it that don’t get explained in one place.

My spouse and I are trying to work out the order of things: when to give notice on our lease, when it’s safe to ship belongings, and how to avoid paying for something twice if a date slips. Every source seems to give a slightly different sequence.

I’m also unsure what changes for a partner who may want to work later, and how long things like a driver’s license, health coverage and a credit history take to get going once we arrive.

For anyone who made a similar cross-border move, what did you do first, and what would you tell someone to double-check with a professional before committing to dates?
