Renting for the first stretch seems like the sensible move for us, since we’re relocating from Phoenix for a job and don’t know Bellevue at all. Still, I keep going back and forth on whether a short lease is worth the extra cost or whether we should commit to a neighborhood now.

Two areas keep coming up in my searches: Crossroads for its convenience and Newport Hills for a quieter feel. Photos and listings only tell me so much, and I can’t judge commute, noise or how walkable things really are from a screen.

We’re also coming from a place with almost no rain, so I honestly don’t know what to look for in a home here. Are there things a Phoenix person would never think to check, like moisture, heating setups or parking?

If you rented before buying, how long did you wait, and did it change which neighborhood you picked in the end?
