Hi all! I thought I’d start a conversation about moving across the U.S., since it seems like more and more people are making big relocations these days. I recently moved from North Carolina to Colorado, and let me tell you—it was a major life event. From planning the route to finding a new place to live, there were so many details to juggle. I thought I’d share my experience and see what others have gone through as well.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was to start planning way earlier than I thought I needed to. Everything from securing housing to forwarding mail took longer than expected. The actual drive was beautiful but exhausting, especially with a car full of pets and essentials. I used a moving company for the bulk of my stuff, and while they were mostly reliable, there were a few hiccups with timing. If anyone has recommendations for trustworthy movers or packing tips, definitely drop them here.
Emotionally, the hardest part was leaving behind a familiar support system. I had a great group of friends and neighbors, and starting fresh has been both exciting and lonely at times. Social media and video calls help, but nothing quite replaces having people nearby. That said, I’ve been making an effort to meet new people—joining local events, volunteering, and even just chatting with folks at the gym. It’s slow going, but worth it.
For those of you who’ve done a big move—what was the biggest challenge? What do you wish someone had told you beforehand? Whether you’re still adjusting or fully settled in your new place, I’d love to hear how you handled the transition. Let’s turn this thread into a go-to spot for advice, encouragement, and shared stories.
