We are moving from Phoenix, Arizona to North Vancouver, British Columbia, and this question has become the thing I keep coming back to. The move makes sense on paper because of budget planning, but the real-life details feel more complicated than the clean relocation advice we keep hearing. Japanese spouse wants Vancouver for safety but misses Tokyo-level convenience. I’m trying to understand how this feels after the first few months, not just during a weekend visit or a corporate relocation tour. For families or newcomers who have already been through something similar, what would you do differently? What should we take seriously before making the decision?

We moved for calm and diversity, but still had to build friends from zero.

The grocery stores helped, but friendship still took effort. Community access is not the same as community.
