Currently based in Seattle, Washington, but Songpa, Seoul, South Korea is next, and this question won’t leave me alone. The move makes sense on paper because of one-income transition, but the real-life details feel more complicated than the clean relocation advice we keep hearing. Is Seoul affordable if company does not cover international school?. I’m trying to understand how this feels after the first few months, not just during a weekend visit or a corporate relocation tour. For families or newcomers who have already been through something similar, what would you do differently? What should we take seriously before making the decision?

I would separate the emotional part from the daily routine. The feeling matters, but the weekday pattern will decide whether the move works. If one spouse speaks Korean better, protect the relationship from becoming a permanent translation service. Also listen to the person in the family who is least excited. They often see the problem everyone else is trying to ignore. The best decision we made was choosing ordinary daily ease over the impressive-looking option.

The honest answer is less romantic than people want. Choose the place that makes Tuesday morning easier, not the place that sounds best online. The city is safe and convenient, but convenience does not erase language barriers, fine dust days, or the emotional weight of starting over. My advice is to rent or stay flexible at first if you do not fully understand the area yet.

The first month made me feel incompetent. Then one day I realized I could handle three errands without asking for help.

Same concern here. We are trying not to let school anxiety make every decision for us.

We changed our housing search after one school visit. The building looked fine, but the parent energy felt wrong for our kid.

We had to stop comparing rent to our old city and start comparing it to the actual life we were buying.
