Run the full monthly number before deciding. Rent or mortgage is only the loud cost; the quiet costs are what wear you down. In LA, the exact commute and parking situation can turn a good apartment into a bad daily life. Also listen to the person in the family who is least excited. They often see the problem everyone else is trying to ignore. I would still make the move, but I would prepare with more cash cushion, more patience, and fewer fantasies.
